Career Readiness Competencies

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, career readiness is the foundation from which job candidates demonstrate requisite core competencies that broadly prepare the college educated for success in the workplace and lifelong career management. The following competencies and related behaviors are based upon a multi-year initiative and validation study made up of career services, university relations, and employer recruiting professionals.

Advocacy and Compassion

Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to compassionately engage people from different backgrounds. The ability to empathize with others, overcome challenges, and diffuse conflict.  

    • Solicit and use feedback from multiple perspectives to make decisions.

    • Demonstrate flexibility by adapting to different work environments.

Proactively develop oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization.
